Sudden Log-out in Snow Leopard (+ Blue Screen)

Similar posts here show that other people are being spontaneously logged out of 10.6, faced with a blue screen, and then the login window. In my case it is caused by connecting my bluetooth (BT) headphones, as the log below states.
Short of never using my BT headphones or any other peripherals, has anyone found a solution to this terrible bug?
Comments like "[Many applications shut down here]" are added to show that the log is just repeating with different applications.

Same issue here!

Hi there,

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and I got the same issue 3 times in a few hours already whereas I didn't plug or did anything special, just while typing something (I thus don't think it has something to do with your bluetooth as you assumed, I would suddenly get logged out instantly!

It's EXTREMELY annoying since I loose everything I was doing as if it would just brutally shut down...

Let's hope someone will find a fix soon if not Apple themselves?

Can I ask: Did you clean install or upgrade from leopard? What mac do you have?

I'm reading similar sudden/spontaneous logout threads on discussions.apple.com (where I posted this problem as well) and it seems that each person's mac has a different trigger (one thread mentioned office mac 2008). The reason that I think it's my BT connection is that the console log above shows that it can't find an audio plugin, after which the windowserver crashes.

This is semi-reproducible for me (that is, every sudden logout happened immediately after an attempted BT connection, but not every BT connection resulted in a logout).

Hopefully this is fixed in a 10.6.1 update *fingers crossed*
 
Sudden Log-out in Snow Leopard (+ Blue Screen)

I've had the same thing happen twice now, and I thought it might be some custom proprietary software used for a game entry designed specifically for Macs.

Now I'm wondering if it's my Logitech wireless mouse.

I'm giving BobZone credit for messaging me and asking me to move the HAL plugin, which I have. So far it has not happened again. I'll post back if it does. @mhlevine: Isn't there some incompatibility with 10.6 and logitech? See here

Yeah, saw that after I posted. Good thing I bought a back up mouse... not that I have much faith it's going to work without the same result! But then, it's a Microsoft mouse, so maybe!

Happened 4 times to me in the past 3 days..annoying.
First 3 times: working in Excel, Parallels running in background; BT mouse
Last time: working in Excel, no BT mouse, but iPhone connected via USB (just charging, no sync running).
The common denominator for me seems to be Excel 2004.

Blue screen + log out

My macbook pro (2.4 ghz 2 GB ram) running snow leopard 10.6 has crashed out twice showing the blue screen ( couple seconds ) and then logging out. Yes Apple it's happening. Any ideas ? Machine has never auto log out/ crashed before snow leopard !

Well, apparently it's not the mouse, as I went and bought a corded one today, hoping it would be more stable. So, I'm thinking software corruption, since no one else on a Mac using it is having the same issues as me.

Following installation of 10.6 - had no problems at all the first day (9/28). THe next day I noticed the blue screen for just a few seconds - then everything was stable for the entire day. But each day it's getting worse and worse. It's now to the point where I can only use the system for a minute or two after booting. I've scheduled a Genius Bar appointment for 9/8. I hate to say this - but I'm glad Bootcamp still works.
 
Crashes - Primary Suspect

As I had posted earlier, I was experiencing some crashes like some of you since I had installed Snow Leopard. I checked all the applications I was using and found out that "Anki" - one of those - was set with the settings: "open with Rosetta". As soon as I unchecked this, no crash happened again... Right now, I'm crossing my fingers and hope for the best to come... So far, 24 hours spent without any crash :p

All I can say is that it would make sense that it would be Rosetta which would cause some problems due to the changes in the architecture itself of the OS with Snow Leopard.

In a nutshell, Primary suspect: >>>>Rosetta:eek:<<<<

Hope this can help some of you... If you are experiencing some crashes with Snow Leopard, please check all your apps and make sure they are not running under Rosetta (click get Info on the .app). Please report your welcomed feedback here!

jsjunks: Is there an easy way to check all apps that open ins rosetta without going to finder and using cmd+i on each one?

After much searching seeing similar things with Excel, it is Rosetta, or others speculated Carbon.

Several folks have filed bug reports with Apple who have acknowledged the bug, but it's been a bug for quite a while.

My plan is to upgrade any "PowerPC" software (Office 2004, Photoshop old, etc.) which would use Rosetta, not holding any breaths for a bug fix on an old tech.

There is a way to check out applications that require Rosetta to run them. Look up at Software/Applications in System Profiler.

The crashes reported in thi sthread are not all the same. If you look at the logs in detail:
the are stored in files with this path
/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/WindowServer*_localhost.crash
where * is some date info.

Just wanted to say -- this is happening to me too

It's only happened 3 times, intermittently. It didn't happen the first week, that I remember. The second week I started using a LaCie terabyte drive through my firewire 800 port, that's the only difference. It seems very sudden and unexpected to me. Happened to me last time when writing an email in Entourage. Any help, Apple?
 
sudden log-out in snow leopard

I too have experienced this problem but for me it seems to occur most often when my screen saver is activated (which I do when I leave the office to lock my macbook pro). When I get back I noticed that the computer logged me out and went back to the login screen.

I initially thought it was related to the energy settings or the screen saver but this morning I noticed the same thing happen when I tried to log back in. I have an iPod touch connected so it tried to open iTunes on login. After a second or two the screen went blue and it logged me out. I re-logged in and have been using it now for about 30 min. without a logout.

I am not using Rosetta for iTunes and that was the only app open at the time. At this point it has not occured while I was working on a doc.
 
Report to Apple?

Good idea to report this to Apple as the crash report does not get sent because of the logout. It fails. So if we want Apple to fix this, they need to know about it.

Same thing happened to me about an hour ago -- I was in the middle of writing an e-mail in Entourage (using Office '04) and the computer suddenly blue-screened and then went back to the desktop as if it had logged me out and then back in. Argh!
 
Spontaneous Logouts - Snow Leopard + Filemaker Pro Advanced 8.0

I have been driven to distraction with the spontaneous logouts, but only using Filemaker Pro Advanced 8.0. I seemed to have solved the problem by changing the schedule of auto-saving the cache from "during idle time" to "every 10 minutes" (Filemaker Pro Advanced>Preferences...>Memory). It may be that Filemaker doesn't recognize when the system is idle under Snow leopard and is trying to save when their is a read or write by the system. This might be the source of the problems with other software as well, i.e. performing auto-save functions at inappropriate times. It's only been a day since I made the change, but I have not had a logout in about 8 hours of continuous use, and it was happening at least once an hour, if not every 15 minutes, before.

Nice thought - that's worth a try. I've now disabled Word, Excel, & PowerPoint's autosave preference. Worth a try!

This is getting coverage over at Macintouch too, with not much success either - the same long list of "Rosetta-ish" bugs.

I could get it to crash on Excel pretty well :D so I'll give it a try a while and report...

Sorry, brodenborn. I had turned off auto-save in Excel, and still got a crash today :(. It was a good thought, however.
