ByteController 0.6 was just released. It is similar to synergy, but free and still no notification floater.

Product Description
ByteController is a small user interface utility for controlling iTunes. ByteController gives you three buttons in your menu bar: Previous Song, Next Song and Play/Pause. Holding the Previous Song and Next Song buttons plays fast forward or rewinds.

This is a pretty cool app, but it worries me. Both of my favorite apps like this, Synergy and pthiTunes Notifier became costly. I'm also a bit excited because Apple's coming out with a widget like these in the new Dashboard in Tiger. I hope it still has hotkeys.
 
I've been wanting something like this for a while, so I'll be giving this a try. Synergy was good but had too many functions that I wouldn't use to justify the price. All I needed was a simple controller in the menu bar.
