Thumbs up iPhone task manager is here - and it's awesome! (Cydia only)

Has anyone else tried out the new iPhone task manager? Kirikae
I noticed it yesterday and was a bit unsure as it sounded like a random app that was going to be terrible and buggy. Boy was I wrong.

It's like the (almost) perfect way of controlling apps with Backgrounding enabled. You double tap the home button from anywhere to bring it up and from there you can switch to any other running app, including springboard.
You can kill running apps with it too and you can pretty much keep anything open.

There are a few issues i've noticed but to be honest it's nothing major.
If you are inside an app, say the mail app and you open up the task manager and quit the mail app. It closes, then reloads itself. You have to switch to another app then kill the previous. So far I haven't found any app that just quits and doesn't come back.

I don't have any way to get screen shots off my phone at the moment (not at home) but if anyone wants I can upload a screen shot of it in action.

(NB. I am in no way affiliated with the author I just wanted to let people know about this awesome app!)

I can forsee a problem right off the bat: double home is how one opens iPod controls. How does that work?

This was my first thought. It does affect it when you are on the springboard however on the lockscreen the ipod controls work fine.

There should be an option in the task manager itself to launch ipod controls or something similar.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just jailbroke my phone yesterday, so I'm learning about all the great things this phone will do now
I just downloaded Kirikae, I like it. It is fast switching between programs and I you can close a open app from the main screen.

Oh sweet labman, that video is perfect (apart from the focus on his camera lol)
I honestly feel this is one, if not THE most important app for the iPhone. There used to be one a while back when I first got into jailbreaking but it was shockingly bad and buggy and vanished off the face of the iEarth.

I hope the author adds the ability to run apps directly from it and possibly comes up with multiple ways of opening the task manager or to work with the iPod controls. Maybe hook them and add a button to them if any music is playing so it lets you open the task manager from the iPod controls window.

I've used Kirikae and it works but mQuickDo is leaps and bounds better. Yes I know Kirikae is free and mQuickDo isn't but hey, you get what you pay for. I have a mQuickDo review in my signature as well.

That looks like a pretty nifty app as well. Although I don't like how it shows 'Backgrounding enabled' when you do it. Kirikae doesn't do this. It simply minimizes the app if you switch to another or the springboard without any pop ups.

I might give mQuickDo a go though if there's a 3 day free trial I can't see the harm in that.

while you're on the app selector, another double home opens the usual double home choice.

Wow, great stuff! Nice find kAoTiX. I've jailbroken 3 times now, and this time I think I'm actually going to stick with it... I'm finding so much great stuff!

Double clicking the Home button seems a lot quicker than carefully swiping that bar in mQuickDo. Plus I really don't need all the other stuff it does.

EDIT: I used mQuickDo for five minutes and while it is really good the bar gets in the way of buttons. You can see it in that video where Flight Control was paused. It happens loads of times.

I'm almost afraid 3.1 will have some killer feature that'll make me want to update.

EDIT: Holy crap I just disabled animations in the settings and switching is now instant.

I really wish some would do a task manager using the safari tabs method of viewing. Something akin to the Pre.

Not sure what you are saying, but if you are in the mail app and bring up Kirikae, just swipe the app right to left for a close option. Is that what you are looking for?

I love this and just deleted mquickdo. It was good but was too tricky on the fingers to get it right. I only wanted the app switching capability, so this is perfect until the home button breaks

Are you using this on a 3g or 3gs? just asking 'cause I want to gauge the speed. And great find.

I love the app, but I wish there were an alternative way of opening it. I use double-click for iPod controls, and I use it all the time. Making it four clicks is probably going to be a deal-breaker.

I do not have this problem at all. I can close the current app fine without it reopening.

Looks pretty awesome, but I'm actually having issues with Kirikae. Seems to crash springboard constantly. Are there any requirements to run it properly?

You must have some other app that's causing some conflits. Try installing it again and see what happens. To the OP, thanks a bunch man!!!!!!! This app is KILLER, so glad I switched from the palm pre to 3GS. With this app the pre is no more the only multitasking phone. I feel for those who are scared to jailbrake!

For those asking I'm on 3GS, haven't tried on my old 3G as it's tucked away in a drawer now

I tried reinstalling to fix the app repoening issue but it still happens. I think the phone gets confused or something and just re-opens the app you just killed.
I think it would be good to have the option to click on the right side of a task to view additional information such as PID, user/group, memory usage, cpu usage etc.

I use MemInfo as well to 'Clean' which really stems back to my 3G days when the memory would depleat with say Safari open. I'm finding this app to be more and more useless to me in regards to doing this so called 'Clean'. It just kills non-essential processes that are using memory. But the 3GS has so much memory it doesnt need it freeing.

What I'll do is get my 3G out and install it on there and film the 2 phones side by side to guage speed and response on both devices running the same apps.
I'll post the results.

Is mail the only app you're having this issue with? Aren't mail and the phone app always meant to be running. If you kill them they just reload. You wouldn't get email or calls or SMSs without them in the background.

No its any app. Not sure why it happens.

You can kill the mail app, it has nothing to do with sms or calls. My phone doesnt fetch mail either so the mail app should not be running unless i told it to.

Ill do some more testing and see if i can find a way to show you wat its doing

I sent the dev an email, but in case he is monitoring this thread do you guys think it would be helpful for the current application to display if it is already backgrounded?

Mail & phone are designed to always run in the background. Yes you can close them, but they will open right back up and run in the background.

That's why when you open Processes in SBSettings, Mail & Phone are always running.
