Former Intel Executive Joins Apple as General Counsel and Senior Vice President

Apple today announced that Bruce Sewell, former general counsel and senior vice president at Intel, will join Apple in a similar role, holding titles of General Counsel and Senior Vice President, Legal and Government Affairs. Sewell, who takes the position of the retiring Daniel Cooperman, will report directly to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.
"We are thrilled to have Bruce join our executive team, and wish Dan a very happy retirement," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "With Bruce's extensive experience in litigation, securities and intellectual property, we expect this to be a seamless transition."

Intel announced Sewell's departure yesterday alongside several other organizational changes, but provided no information on his future plans. Sewell's apparently-sudden departure raised some eyebrows given current antitrust investigations focused on Intel, but today's announcement by Apple provides reassurance regarding the circumstances of his departure.

Interesting.

Sewell’s no stranger to Apple. Prior to joining Intel he was a partner in the litigation firm of Brown and Bain, where he handled such notable cases as the landmark fight between Apple Computer and Microsoft Corporation over the copyright of the Macintosh Graphical User Interface.

Yeah, although that didn’t really work out for Apple. Not sure I would brag about that on my resume.

There have been a number of controversial legal moves by Apple, including shutting down websites that dared to stray too close to its brand names (iLounge was once iPod Lounge), going after rumors sites while tracking down employees responsible for leaks, and the back-and-forth with Palm over iTunes syncing and USB Implementers Forum regulations. Bruce Sewell is bound to find himself in future controversial situations.

The first time he makes a move that we think is misguided, we'll call it "Sewell's Folly". :D

Apple hires a Google executive. Then he quits Apple and Google is suddenly putting out its own software that looks like Apple’s, now this. Is Apple inviting in spies to seal Apple ideas.

I guess he couldn't take the heat at a real company and needed to find somewhere else to do his 'work.' I guess he and John Rubenstein will be talking about strategy as they cry in their beers.. What a traitor!

Cooperman is an offering to the SEC that Apple will become less
aggressive defending it's right to defend itself.

Too bad. Personally don't care for Seawell. Too cerebral. Too into negotiated compromises.

You need to close the Trachea until the chest stops moving in 2010. :apple:
