Found Applecare at home, how do I know if it's been used?

I just found applecare for an ipod nano in the attic of our house, it's still in it's box with the original shrink wrap on so it has never been opened.

How do i check if it has been registered or not?

There's two ipod nanos in the house and neither are under warranty according to the apple site, so I guess it's never been used.

and so if it has never been used, is it fine to sell on ebay?

thanks

Isn't the serial number on the inside of the box, so if it hasn't been opened, it couldn't have been used?
