Why no network scanning support on Airport Extreme?

After hours of fooling around with my Epson All-in-One scanner/printer I found out that Apple does not support Airport Extreme network scanner functions. 😡

Why?

Is there a hack or a workaround besides connecting the Epson directly to my Mac?
 
The print server on the Express/Extreme/Time Capsule has always been for printing only. I'm unsure why Apple hasn't updated this to include multifunction capabilities. The only workaround is to get a USB multifunction print server (either wired or wireless) and connect your printer to that. Otherwise, get a networkable multifunction printer and you won't have to worry about workarounds.

I was in the same boat as you when I bought my Time Capsule with my Epson RX595. I ended up getting a wired MFP print server, but it doesn't operate quite as seamlessly as having a true network printer.
