iPod Recover music from broken iPod on Windows

Hey, so a friend asked me for help recovering music from her iPod. The iPod is giving her the sad face instead of starting up, and I believe it’s a 5G. She’s running Windows (I assume Vista), so any software that would work would need to be for Windows, and probably free (although very cheap might be ok). I understand her hardware may just be messed up, but if it is possible to recover, how would it be done? Would forcing it into disk mode and using SharePod work?
