iPod touch complicated pdf files: slow and unresponsive. Is there a fix?

I'm having problems viewing large complicated pdf files on my ipod touch (2nd generation). They viewer grinds to a halt and won't allow me to pan or zoom.

This happens particularly with transit maps (here's the SF MUNI map):

and I assume it's because of complicated embedded vector graphics or the like.

My question is: What can I do to modify the pdf file so that I can still see the route details but it doesn't overwhelm the pdf viewer.
