Just wondering if the screensavers stop working when the screen turns off?

Seeing as there is no need for them to work when you cannot see them.
 
They keep running after the screen's turned off. I noticed this once on my iBook, I managed to bump the mouse so slightly that the screen turned back on but the screensaver kept running.
