Best use of violins in non-classical music

I love the the use of violins in modern music. I was listening to Cat Power yesterday – I'm not a really a fan, but the use of strings in her stuff is great, really haunting. I was wondering if people had similar, violin based favourites.

There are just......so...many.....examples. The new Kings of Convenience album is just one.

The Levellers and the later Wonder Stuff albums both heavily use violins. I'll also vote for the Waterboys.

And yes, I know I'm showing my age

I think my favorite is Jimmy Page/Robert Plant album No Quarter from 1994. They had the London Metropolitan Orchestra and several other guest musicians backing them. The version of Kashmir on this album is absolutely amazing.

I'm a sucker for the rock/classical crossovers. I like the Aerosmith version of Dream On they did for the MTV VMAs one year with the strings. And, yes, I also actually like Metallica's S&M album they did with the San Francisco orchestra.

^^ I was just gonna mention S&M..

Yngie also has performed with classical accompaniment. I'm not a fan of this style, but there it is.

I played violin for a few years when I was younger. The coolest song we played was the theme song from pulp fiction.

Yellowcard has a guy that plays fiddle and does backflips on stage. It sort of sounds like a violin.

I wish electric violins were used more often in trance, they sound so awesome as a lead.

Without a doubt the band My Dying Bride greatly mixes violins in their British doom metal music ...

Their newest album brought back the violon and one song in particular is fantastic : Santuario Di Sangue
