hard drive sleep and energy saver

because i'm receiving faxes on my machine (and i haven't been able to get the "wake when detect modem activity" to work) i'd like to leave my machine running. the question i have is if i check "put hard drive to sleep when possible" in the sys prefs will i be not running the drives. how long for the drive to "go to sleep" and should the fan still be running - cause it does. it there any way to know if the drive is "sleeping".
