Verizon Goes on Offensive Against iPhone Again With 'Droid Does' Teasers

Just weeks after attacking AT&T's 3G network and indirectly the iPhone with a "There's a map for that" ad campaign, Verizon has rolled out a new campaign for a yet-to-be-introduced device from Motorola known as the "Droid", focusing on what it perceives as deficiencies in the iPhone. The new television commercial, introduced yesterday, features iPhone-like fonts and music listing things the iPhone "doesn't do" and ends with a teaser asking users to sign up at DroidDoes.com for more information.

Verizon must be losing a lot of customers. It's the usability of the device, not the specs, but some people are too thick to understand that

As The New York Times notes, Verizon's increasingly aggressive commercials focusing on the iPhone make it hard to believe that the company will begin offering the iPhone any time in the near future, despite the fact that Apple and Verizon have reportedly been in discussions about bringing the iPhone to Verizon when AT&T's exclusivity arrangement apparently expires next year.
That's probably the most important part of the article.

Thats quite a good advert, makes want to visit the website and it will hopefully make Apple stand up and take note.

Thats what really bothers me. Verizon charges for everything!!!!!!

To me Verizon themselves need to change a lot of things before they can compare themselves to Apple or AT&T.

Wow. Another phone that tries to do everything under the sun and even transforms into a 12 foot robot when docked? No thanks i'd rather have a simple but intuitive UI that works. Features are nice and all but not when I won't use 75% of them do to usage difficulty. Sigh. It seems petty for every manufacturer to try and position their device as an iPhone killer when they are oft anything but. Leave that to the tech blogs.

This is unbelievably short sighted of Verizon. Just because the talks aren't doing so well right now, doesn't mean that an agreement can't be reached in the future.
I guess this means I have to listen to even more bitching from the Verizon fanboys.

They currently charge extra for Visual Voicemail.

Everything else is the same price as ATT.

Oh that is so good.

I'm sure we all agree that this will push iPhone development a lot further.

This is a much better ad than those lousy Mac PC commercials.

...ahhyep, sure is.

Time will tell whether the Droid kills the iPhone. In the meantime... IMHO, I'm not a fan of squared-off keyboard arrangements; I prefer a more offset row arrangement, like traditional keyboards. I think I know why it was done, but that doesn't change my opinion.

Which of course is like rear ends; everyone has one, and everyone thinks everyone else's stinks.

end of the day there a company who sell phones its just another phone to them i guess. its only like o2 out here in the uk going on about the palm pre. Apple has the right idea with the os but lacks some features this device supposedly has. Then again not everyone wants bells and whistles

To me, the strangest part....

...of that (otherwise effective ad) is the line:

"iDon't run widgets."

OK, sure, maybe they aren't called "widgets." But there are 45743594389578934578934 apps in the App Store, with more coming every day.

The App Store is arguably the iPhone's greatest strength. It's certainly not a weakness.

A funny thing to note about these ads is that if you attempt to view the site referenced using mobiles safari, you can't do it.

The Verizon - Droid Experience

iDon't support concurrent web access and voice calls.

iDon't support international network standards (like GSM).

iDon't have over 85,000 APPs (at least not yet).

iDo want complete control of all hardware and Apps on your smart phones.

iWill have to buy another phone for international travel.

iWill disable features that do not benefit my bottom line.

iWIll nickel and dime you for everything.

iWill bash the other carriers..until my network fails under the same pressure when it is finally "tested".

I think we can safely assume that Verizon will completely ruin the user experience with their hamfisted approach to device software control.

Things are playing out strangely though. Verizon + iPhone now looks unlikely, yet Apple and AT&T aren't exactly bosom buddies at this point. And it's odd to see AT&T pushing other exclusive phones (like the Garmin turd) when the iPhone has been their primary power source.

What is Apple's master plan? Their own wireless service?

Inquiring minds want to know.
