NASA iPhone Application Appears in App Store

NASA, the U.S. space agency, has released an iPhone application [App Store, Free] that enables users to stay on top of the latest NASA news. The application offers access to up-to-the-minutes news, videos, and photos from NASA missions. Users can also track the orbital locations of various NASA spacecraft in real-time.

LOL!

Unfortunately, Apple was forced to remove the app after reports of bricked iPhones. Scientists at NASA were "shocked" to learn that programming of the accelorometer was not supposed to be in metric numerics.

Didn't I read something in the AT&T Terms of Service that "telemetry devices" are prohibited? Isn't that what the satellite data is?

I'm pretty sure they mean telemetry as directly connecting with remote devices. This app doesn't directly connect with NASA's satellites, it just grabs the latest news about them — no different than logging onto NASA's website to see the latest positioning of a probe.

I doubt it.

A telemetry device is something that measures and tracks objects like, say, a space station.

Your iPhone isn't doing that. NASA is doing that and simply sending your phone a map of the results. You're allowed to access a map from over the internet.

I am curious how much money they spent developing this app. Government is not exactly known for coming in on-time and within budget!

I am more excited by private space endeavors, like Burt Rutan's Scaled Composites' activities... It's time to get private business interested in space -- government is too inefficient!

P.S. Does the NASA app access the Astronomy Picture of the Day? It would be cool to be able to browse those, and either add-to-photos or email a link to FULL res of ones you want to keep. A steady source of desktop wallpapers!

This is a very nice app...esp for the price!

The problem with expecting private companies to help explore space is that exploring space is incredibly inefficient. It's vastly expensive and provides little profit that couldn't be better made on earth. Exploring space, like education, is one of those things we need governments to do.
