Imac and kernel panics

My girlfriend's Imac keeps getting kernel panics and now I can't even start it up! The panic starts before the desktop opens.

I have just tried a pRAM reset but that didn't do anything, the veil came down before any second chime

This has happened before, when downloading music, but this just happened when I ran a software update as iphoto wasn't launching right.

It is a second hand computer and I don't know where the discs are!

What can i do??

I can't start in safe mode, the grey veil comes down just after the white screen comes up with the apple and the dial, about three seconds after the dial appears.
I've tried everything an online tech guy suggested, PRAM, holding shift, holding c with discs in, taking out RAM one at a time and testing that, all failing!!
Now got two option I think; try booting from my rebootable carbon copy by forcing x on start;
Or, Removing the hard drive and putting it into my enclosure and backing up the info on it all before wiping it all and starting again (if we can get past the start up somehow!!)

Anybody out there with any other extreme ideas?? Not too happy about opening the old machine up to be honest!!

Thanks for response.

I took the RAM cards out one at a time and it still panicked at the white screen start up when the dial started spinning.

The computer is second hand, we've had it for a year, but we don't have the original discs.

I have put my disc inside to try and boot up the disk utility to run a repair, but that won't start up with option, shift, or C, or D pressed down, and I have made a bootable copy of my macbook pro with the same OSX on it to try and force (x) that to start, but to no avail.

We can't get to archive/reinstall, we can't get past the panic at all it seems, and we can't get my disc out, holding louse button or eject doesn't work either!!

Is there any other bypasses into the computer?

The only recommendation people seem to have now is to open the mac and get the hard drive out to put it in an enclosure and back it up on mine.

This seems harsh, any other ideas??
