The easiest way to discover your iBoot version is put your iPhone in DFU mode and then go into System Profiler and go to USB Devices and look at your iPhone and it should give you iBoot version.
WARNING: However if you do this you will need to restore (but I do not know, some of the geniuses here may be able to get it out of DFU mode without restoring).
If the iBoot version you see is iBoot-359.3.2 then sorry! You cannot Jailbrake your iPhone! However if it is a different number than congratulations! You can Jailbrake so just open up Blackra1n (google it) and then let it Jailbrake your iPhone.

Hope this helps,
King Mook Mook

I just saw this in another thread in this forum. Unfortunately, all the jailbreak threads are running together in my head, so I can't find it again, but I believe it was something like hold down power and home button together until iPhone shuts off. Then when you turn it back on, it should start normally. If it doesn't, google irecovery and use that.

I thought the latest version of blackra1n fixed this? But the phones with the new bootrom would be a tethered jailbreak.

Yes, search for the thread here about the tethered jailbreak.

To get out of DFU mode, just hold down power and home button until apple logo appears, release both and phone will reboot. @Night Spring was pretty close !

Alright so I did a tethered jailbreak and installed all my apps. If the phone turns off am I correct in thinking that I can simply plug it into the computer, click 'make it ra1n', and after boot all my apps and jailbroken apps will be there untouched?

Thanks!

Exactly. As long as you have a computer with blackra1n and a USB cable handy, you'll be back and running in 30 seconds.

People actually considering going with "tethered" Jailbreaks? What happens when a battery dies when you're in a car - can't even plug it into to a charger. Or you simply need to reboot because an app locked up? You need to carry a laptop and cable with you at all times!

Exactly ! Or a thumb drive with Blackra1n on it and a USB cable.

My advice to everyone is sell these brand new ones and buy one of the gently used 3GS phones that are about 2 months old before the supply dries up.

i just bought two 3GS phones, both about 2 months old, in the past week and a half cause I am not gonna carry around a laptop.

Well, it's not a problem for me, because I'm never more than a half hour away from a computer I can use, and it's no inconvenience to keep a USB cable tucked away in my purse. But I certainly agree it's not for everybody. It totally depends on how likely you are to spend significant chunks of time away from computer access.

For me it doesn't really matter. When I go to work I bring my MB anyways. It isn't really a problem for me to slip in a usb cable.

For some people I can see how that might be a hassle though- if you don't work with a computer all day etc.

I just had my iPhone 3GS replaced under warranty. It came out of the small white cardboard. The serial is xxx43. I jailbroke it and restarted it several times and everything seems to be fine. I thought the serial # on my phone meant it should be tethered?

If the 2nd digit in the serial number is a letter and not a number, that means it was remanufactured. I believe it is given a new serial number and new date of re-manufacture (not the original date of manufacture).

You likely have the older bootrom.

That is in fact the case. Thank you for the explanation.
