Personally I don't see what the issue is. There is plenty of room in the marketplace for the Droid, the iPhone and others. Apple do not need to (and are not aiming) for 100% market share...

Why not the iPhone?
I might be wrong, but it seems I remember thousands of people lining up for iPhones when they were first launched.

Why not the iPhone?
Top 10 reasons:
10 The iPhone is not available for Verizon
09 Not everyone has tasted the sweet kool-aid that is brand kool-aid
08 Android is not
07 They need cellular service when they are at: 36°14′31″N 116°49′33″W
06 They get a free kick ass GPS w/streetview
05 They can't talk and surf the interwebz at the same time
04 They had to use the refund from returning the Blackberry Tour before it expired.
03 90 thousand fart/burp and flashlight apps just overwhelms their inner child
02 They didn't have to shop Sky-Mall to get a $300 alarm clock
and the #1 reason:They remember the uprising of the machines in iRobot & Terminator and hope to get a pass when our Robotic overlords rise to take their rightful place as our omnipotent leaders

"Many people have been comparing the new Droid to the iPhone, and some have even called the new device the true iPhone killer. But judging from the people I talked with who were buying the Droid, it looks like it might be more of a BlackBerry killer."

Most of the people that I spoke to as well about the Droid say roughly the same. They are loyal to Verizon and don't want to go to AT&T. If the IPhone was available on Verizon they would likely own one. I agree with the above... It is more a Blackberry killer....

Exactly how much thought went into that comment?

Competition is a good thing.

There is huge room for improvement in the iPhone.
This way Apple, Inc. might just pull their fingers out.

So yes, I do hope the "Droid" affects Apple.

The fact that this is a new kind of phone for Motorola, hundreds of people is very nice.

But, I ask you, how many queued when the first iPhone was released, here and across the pond? Certainly more than hundreds.

When the third generation of the Motorola Whatsit is released, will hundreds of people be queueing for that?

all of you make excellent points..

here where im from.. only one other person knew about the droid and thats because he is with verizon and i told him about the droid since he was getting a new phone..

The droid is not an iphone killer...
I must admit that android is coming close. Sometimes it makes me wish i had android. Then i look at my phone and everything android has built in.. the iphone has an app for it.. I think Apple may surprise us with a huge OS update in the next month with more customization options.. But Apple has to do something.. and I know that Steve Jobs has something up his sleeves to WOW us again.

O and does the Droid even come with a Gig of memory??

It would be nice if something affected Apple, but Apple seems pretty oblivious to the outside world so I'm not holding my breath. Yes, the droid is not an iphone killer. That would be Apple.

The Droid is not an iPhone killer, nothing is. God himself could release a phone and there would still be a market for the iPhone. There's plenty of room for iPhone, WebOS, RIM, WM, and Android. My prediction is iPhone, Android, and WebOS will dominate consumer phones while RIM and WM will dominate business used phones. Oh, and considering more and more of my friends are getting smartphones the market is going to be huge.

Apple is missing out by sticking with AT&T, but if they're happy with their sales whatever. Competition is great for the market, and we can admit Apple started the race but others are quickly catching up.

By the way I know lots of people who don't like the iPhone. Different opinions, people.

The Droid is a great device and will do well for Verizon. As others have said, competition is a good thing. The iPhone isn't going to suit everyones needs, nor should it.

"Five hundred phones is a lot of phones to sell in one day," Verizon Wireless spokesman David Samberg

I laughed at that. 500 phones in one day OMG! How will the iPhone ever compare...oh wait.

I like the looks and what the Droid can do but imho iPhone is still the top phone for me.

Most interesting is that articles are saying that the droid might not be an iPhone killer - but rather a blackberry killer. And while I don't think the blackberry is going away anytime soon - I do think the droid will put a dent into the blackberry market if only because both are available on Verizon.

My co-workers wife and one other guy were all that were in line at 7:00 when the local store opened here in Metro Atlanta

Exactly, it's a young market and most people are first time smart phone buyers.

At the end of the day does it really matter who "wins"? I'm very happy with my iPhone so far but it wouldn't bother me in the slightest if Motorola, Palm or RIM sell more phones than Apple. As long as there is fair competition then the companies will have to innovate and improve their products every year which can only be good for their customers.

The droid launch is sounding very much like the Palm Pre launch.

Why not, its called competition. I can see people wanting nothing to do with apple/iPhone/ATT for lots of reasons.

Different strokes for different folks. For me, the Droid does look impressive and tempting. I'm happy with ATT and how my iPhone works but its good to know that there's a viable alternative to the iPhone and the competition will also continue to drive development for the iPhone.

Yes, the similarities between the droid and pre in terms of hype and launch are striking. Both are supposed to be the future of a once-mighty company... Both are the first with a new OS... Both have been extensively compared to te iPhone... And so on.

Ultimately, I think the droid is just one of many android phones. I'm sure it will do well for verizon, but it will rather quickly be surpassed and forgotten when newer android phones come out. IMO its main impact will be to keep those vzn users with iPhone-envy from jumping ship, not to convert those who already have iPhones.

The fact that there is only one iPhone (ok, two right now, but close enough), by one manufacturer, with one version of the OS (on currently shipping phones) may seem like a limitation, but it's actually a big help to apple both in terms of media hype and user differentiation.

...competition is a great thing. Why wouldn't you want another cellular company to be successful? It will only make the iPhone better in the longrun (new features, etc.). Geez. Wipe the glaze from your eyes. Someone owning a Droid is not going to make your iPhone less valuable.
