Scanning pictuers

I have some pictuers (3 x 4 and 4 x 6) and i want to save them to my computer so that i will have them for years to come. I have a HP all-in-one and i wanted to know at what res should i scan them?

btw thw pics are B&W.
 
If you are looking for archival storage, then you will want to scan at the highest optical resolution. You may also want to see if your scanner is compatible with Vuescan. This will allow you to control the scans a bit more.

I would also suggest that you save in both JPG and TIFF.
