TM trouble backing up over network (error 109)

Hi,
Ever since updating to 10.6, TM will no longer backup because it cannot access the sparsebundle (it gives an error 109, don't know what that means)
I have an external USB disk that is connected to an Airport Extreme. This airport ihas a wired connection with the router in my office where it is connected to my MBP. I had hoped an update to 10.6.2 would resolve the issue, but no. So i deleted the whole sparsebundele and emptied my backup disk, reset the backup disk in the TM preferences and made a new complete backup. This succeeded, but only the first time. It now refuses to make consequent backups, giving me the 109 error again everytime. What could be wrong here? 😕
 
I can't help you with your problem, other to say than I had the exact same issue. I've read somewhere that the airport USB disk has issues with larger backups.

It was primarily for this reason that i ended up just buying a mini server to save all my network backups to, instead of trying to continue to cludge with the airport extreme USB disk, which was very flaky.

Sorry can't be of more help, but I don't think it's an isolated issue on your end, FWIW.
 
I had the same issue with the same set up. I was told from a rep at the apple store that this is a normal issue if you have an external USB disk that is connected to an Airport Extreme. He talked to the store manager and they let me bring back my Airport Extreme (even though I bought it 7 months ago) and exchange it for a Time Capsule. I haven't had any errors yet.
 
i am having this same issue...however, i'm not using a extreame base station. I have the time machine drive plugged into my multimedia mac mini running OSX 10.5.? Clientand I just mount the drive to my MBP. I get that error 109. I have no idea whats wrong. It worked once but that was only after I formatted the drive and lost all my old backups.

Anyone found a fix for this 'Error 109"? - I have had this problem backing up to a drive hanging off my Airport Extreme.

I can get my main iMac to back up using Time Machine but when I try and back up the other 2 MacBooks in our home it causes chaos! - all the sparsebundles cannot be 'accessed' and I end up losing all my Time Machine backups as the only solution I have found is to delete the sparsebundles and start again.
I am just using my iMac and it seems to be working fine but I really need to back up my MacBooks but am scared of what the consequences may be.

This started happening around Snow Leopard release for me.
