This problem has never happened to me before and I've also never heard of it and can't find any information about it anywhere.

I have an unlocked jailbroken iphone that's never given me any serious problems for about a year.

When I click the text icon, the top of the screen reads:

Text messages (-1)

Where all my listed text messages used to be it is now blank.

When I try to send a text after typing in the contact name or number it immediately says:

Error sending message

I tried restarting the iphone. I can send and receive phone calls perfectly.

Anyone ever had this problem or have any advice?

It sounds as if the SMS database has got corrupted.

Do you have a back-up that you could restore to, from a date before the problem first occurred?

You need to connect to itunes and do a backup restore from a known good backup that you last did.. You may have to re-jailbreak your phone though?
