Damn it. I just sent my new 4G 40GB - my first iPod - in for work yesterday because it kept rebooting spontaneously. I wish someone had been able to tell me this was coming - I would have at least liked to have tried it before sending my 'pod off for weeks.

Like every other recent update, I'm not touching this one either.

The iPod update before the last one killed mine.

The 10.3.5 update killed fonts in Quark at our office.

Etc., etc., etc.

I have given up hope of Apple updating my software for my 3G iPod. I doubt many new features will come out for the 3Gs as they are no longer in the spotlight and it is more incentive to buy a new iPod. They really should bring all the features to both as the hardware chip must be very similar.

I hope will fix my iPod.

I have not been able to use the firewire cable yet. I waited for it all to load with usb 1.0 not fun.

Apple said I could send it in, and they would test it or replace it.

Lets see if anything changes.

Well that's confusing.

This thread says it's version 3.0.1. Software Update says it's version 3.0.2, the readme says it includes 3.0.1 and the Software Update "info panel" says it contains 3.0.1. In addition, the last iPod update contained 3.0.1 but didn't list these improvements.

When it's finished downloading I'll find out what version it says it includes. Has anyone updated their 4G iPods? What version does it say now?

I'm surpised the 3G's weren't updated to stop Reals music. If word got out that's all the update did, I'd be surprised if anyone applied it. This could work to our favour, as Apple would drop in something (maybe better power management or shuffle on main menu) to "encourage" people to upgrade and lock out Real. Here's hoping.

AppleMatt

edit: I'd love to tell you what version the package contains but it crashes on opening.

edit 2: It's because my iPod was connected but not mounted. It says it includes 3.0.1, which means it shouldn't be any different from the last updater, right?

for the older generation?

In old updates for iPods, they usually say "recommended only for iPods with click wheel."
Will it hurt my 2nd gen if I download this?

It won't hurt, but it also won't do anything.

Sure they are. If (more like when) Fairplay is updated to lockout Harmony, you'll see an update for all generations of iPods. Of course they aren't going to add new features, but your iPod will continue to work and support all of the compatible music formats just as it always has.

Including playing audiobooks at faster speeds without changing pitch?
Where's this update?

There are indeed new features that the 4G models have that the 3G and earlier models don't. But that's to be expected since they're a generation newer obviously. There aren't too many hardware or software products out there that continually update previous generation models to bring them up to the current one or otherwise there would never be any reason to ever upgrade!

Now having said that, Apple will continue to support the previous gen models to insure that they will be compatible with the iTMS and still do everything else that they have been able to do all along. It's not like they're losing features they previously had or anything.

Yes, a 15 GB 3rd generation.

As AppleMatt already said, can I play audiobooks at faster speeds without changing pitch?

Where's the pull head phone feature that will pause the music when I remove the head phones?

(possibly) Improved usage of battery through firmware update?

Charge via USB? (don't know if that is firmware or not though)

And if this is true, can I do anything with the AirPort Express?

Hey Apple, I want the new software features on my (current product) mini.

Can't happen. USB doesn't provide enough power. I think that power over USB is only about a third of FireWire power. Yet another reason that FireWire kicks the **** out of USB.
