OpenOffice 1.1.2 (X11 version) performance?

What's your experience with open office 1.1.2? How well does it perform compared to Office v.X, Appleworks 6, and Thinkfree office? What's your recommended productivity software?

I have a Rev. B 12" PB, Panther, 256 MB and looking for a (free preferably) word processor and spreadsheet. I'll be doing some presentation as well. Thanks!!
