help, my mid '09 macbook pro keeps going to sleep

today i opened up my macbook pro and it started up rather slow, and when it got to the log-in screen it feel asleep and it wouldnt wake up. i had to turn it off and do it again while the problem persisted. whats wrong with it and what do i do

Your warranty should cover you to get it repaired by apple?!

So many things come to mind!!! looks like you beat me to the punch. Well Played! on a serious note, check your permissions, and clean your hdd up a bit.

You could try this:

Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

and then if necessary this:

Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
