iPod ipod does not show up on mac

I have an old classic Ipod 20GB color and when i try to sync it
it does not show up on my mac I tried restarting it with the Menu + Center button but when i do that it said that the ipods corrupted and try restoring before using itunes then my ipod icon disappears what do i do
