classic start up error with usb device connected

ok - i have a device (summa d60 vinyl cutter) hooked to my G4 running os 10.3.5 via usb

everytime i start classic with it hooked up i get this error.... any idea how to fix it??

Remember the goold old conflict test, made popular with Casady & Greene's Conflict Catcher software for Mac OS 9, and obsoleted with the arrival of Mac OS X (except in Classic mode)? That's what you're going to need to do here. Look at this Apple KB article for guidelines for troubleshooting these kinds of problems.
 
i emailed Summa and heres what they told me....
As for MAC the best solution for now is to run your MAC on OS 9.2 (NOT
classic mode), but the actual older 9.2 operating system. In this
older OS
everything works USB drivers, Adapters, Cutter Control, CoCut,
Magi-Sign,
etc... However when you go the OS X allot of those stop functioning
depending on what version of OS X your using. Right now there is no
solution for your new OS X (10.3.5). There is suppose to be two
programs
coming up shortly that might resolve this: one is called MacSign and
the
other is FlexiSign for MAC. Unfortunately neither of those two
programs are
available yet and from what I hear will not be released for a month or
more.

It is possible to get the cutter running on OS X (10.2), but as I
stated
above it is very limited on what functions. You would have to run the
D60
cutter though three cables (the serial cable, PC serial to MAC serial
adapter, and though a MAC serial to USB adapter (not included)). Then
you
will need a program called MagiSign (version 1.4) that plugs into
Illustrator. Lastly you will need an Illustrator version 10 or CS.

To avoid lots of headaches I would highly recommend downgrading to OS
9.2 or
just try waiting until one of the two new programs become available.

So... what s the easiest way to uninstall os x and go back to 9.2??

Don't uninstall Mac OS X, whatever you do. Is your Mac from before the MDD PowerMac G4 (the first Mac that doesn't support Mac OS 9 booting)? If it is, and you have Mac OS 9 installed, from Mac OS X, go to System Preferences, then Startup Disk, and select Mac OS 9 as the system to boot. Click restart when prompted, then your Mac will boot into Mac OS 9. If you don't have Mac OS 9.2.2 yet but do have Mac OS 9.1 or later, you can upgrade to Mac OS 9.2.2 for free from Apple's Support Downloads page.
EDIT: If for some reason Mac OS 9 isn't installed on your computer, you'll find it included with the software restore discs that came with your Mac. Insert the Mac OS 9 CD, go to Startup Disk in System Preferences and boot from it, then run the Mac OS 9 installer.
 
I was running 9.2.2 previously so I have no trouble there. I then installed OS X and upgraded to 10.3.5 . I don't know if my Mac is from before the MDD PowerMac G4..... How do I find out? It was bought in May of 2000.

If I understand your post correctly - I should just be able to go to System Preferences, then Startup Disk, and select Mac OS 9 as the system to boot. Click restart when prompted, then my Mac will boot into Mac OS 9. I won't have to uninstall or reinstall anything... right??

The MDD PowerMac G4 was released in 2002, so if your Mac was bought in 2000, then it definitely is before the MDD PowerMac G4 and therefore WILL boot into Mac OS 9. Your interpretation is correct - as long as Mac OS 9 is installed, and valid (if you can use Classic, you have a valid Mac OS 9 installation), selecting Mac OS 9 from Startup Disk in System Preferences then clicking the Restart button will cause your Mac to boot into Mac OS 9. EDIT: Almost forgot - you should not need to reinstall anything. If Classic works, then this procedure will almost certainly work.
