macOS app with core data not loading the saved file

we've managed to save a binary and xml file of our document in our app but for some reason it wont load the file properly

if we override the readFromURL😱fType:error: method and check the properties of the document after calling [super readFromURL😱fType:error:] the properties aren't initialized...

what could cause this to happen?
