Illusion Labs, developer of the popular iPhone game Touchgrind, has posted a video demonstrating a Mac version of the game utilizing the multi-touch capabilities of the MacBook's trackpad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FsfROlawZoQ

The developer describes it as tech demo and hasn't committed to releasing it. Illusion Labs is the same developer who demoed their iPhone games on a large multi-touch table in 2009.

All of Apple's notebooks now contain a multi-touch trackpad that could be used for such purposes. In fact, Apple's multi-touch trackpads can track up to 11 distinct multi-touch presses.

The good thing with a trackpad is that it can use absolute positioning, which allows for drawing and lots of things other than just a relatively moving mouse!

Eleven fingers? This is something new. I'm guessing it's for the occasional Dr Seuss character so they don't feel left out?

I've always wondered how long it'd take for them to start implementing the multi-touch pads to a broader range purposes.

I agree! I am learning Obj-C and the principles of iPhone app development are fairly easily to move to the Mac. I expect that this could be the first of many Mac apps along these lines.

Perhaps a display that exactly mirrors the size and resolution of an iPhone in landscape mode?? haha I'm sure the sizes (in terms of dimensions) aren't that far off now anyways. I'm away from my MBP but just from memory, looking at my iphone in landscape is probably pretty close to the curent size of the trackpad.

Clever stuff! I've still not had the pleasure of rubbing my finger over a Macbook Pro multitouch trackpad. Ill have to pop to the Apple store for a play.

Soon the keyboard and trackpad on the Macbooks/Macbook Pros will be replaced with a multi-touch iPhone/tablet/slate surface.

This only seems like a natural progression. Why not make full use of the hardware now available on all Apple laptops? I'm not sure that there would be a huge market/demand for this but as a tech demo it's definitely interesting.

The 11th press is for what exactly? (Don't say porn)

Maybe for games when you need all 10 fingers and your nose to play?

Did you watch the video? Did you see how when the guy put his hand flat on it that there were touch points for the finger tips and for the bits of the finger further back that touched the pad as well?

That is awesome. I can't wait to see what becomes of this. What other types of games can utilize the trackpad?

When you look closely at 0:22 - 0:26 you can see (at least I get that impression) that the white dots are not actually just dots, but they chance their shape to be elliptical a little bit. Is this only because of some motion bluring, or is the Touchpad actually able to detect the form of the finger, not only it's position?

The Trackpad is capable of detecting a larger area / ellipse.
It can see if you just have the fingertip or if you have half the finger on it.

If you have a Macbook/Pro you should try the following application: FingerMgmt.app :)

This is worth a Billion or Two!

Amazing, how could i not have thought about this possibility! There is a huge variety of Apps out in the App Store capable of being steered by MacBooks trackpads.
Man! Installed base is big, and this is the smart way of extending the Use resolution independent Apps eventually being created for the Tablet.

This could be a billion dollar market! And i would certainly play a couple of these porgies on my MacBook. That ought to be fun!

Since gaming is now a common time-killer for Macusers owning iPhones and getting sucked into buying Macs by the halo effect, the possibility to play those on the big screen will be adopted by many!

This is a brilliant development. Cant wait until all those fun games are MACplayable. World productivity drops 10% ;-)

Way to go!
