When hooking a MBP to an external Monitor

When hooking a MBP to an external monitor can you close the laptop and use just the external display like a desktop?... I think one time i was told it could be done.

Yes. You just need to have it on a/c power and have an external keyboard & mouse attached.

sweet because i was debating on an mbp imac combo or just a screen.. still not 100%on what i want but this helps.
