How do you know, you have Mac OS X apps on your iBook running Mac OS 9.2.2?

What if you hold the Option/Alt key during boot up and see if that brings up the boot loader, from which you can decide, if you wan to boot into OS X or OS 9?

Also, as far as I understand Classic, it is not a separate system, but a program in Mac OS X itself, it just runs Classic software in it. It's like running Windows via a virtual machine on current Intel Macs.
