I tried using the search function, but I really didn't find any answers to my question. I have a 3GS that I'm using on T-Mobile right now. It is 3.1.2 firmware, since I know better than to update before a jailbreak and unlock is released. I've read a lot about saving my SHSH to Cydia. What does that mean? How do I do that? What benefits does this have? Thanks for you help.

No prob, I know it's a lot to take in, but read carefully!

This article speaks directly about the 3GS, but does it work the same for a 3G? My fiance has a 3G on T-Mobile as well. Would the process work the same?

Nope, the 3G's hardware is different from the 3GS. You won't need to worry about saving the SHSH for the 3G, you'll always be able to downgrade that.

I really do appreciate your help. I'm by far not the most technologically advanced person. I just know I love my iPhone and I'm trying to do all I can not to run into any problems. If something happens I'm in trouble because I know I don't have a chance fixing it :D

When you save your SHSHs the version that you save has nothing to do with the version of software on the phone. It relates to the version of software that apple is presently signing. You must have saved SHSHs after 3.1.3 was already available through Itunes. If you did the same thing today it would save SHSHs for version 4.
