Upgrading/replacing combo drive in iBook

It looks like my Combo Drive in my iBook is dead, and Apple says it will be too expensive for them to fix it (the guy said "close to $1k"!). I'm thinking about replacing it myself. I'm not afraid of doing the work, but I'm not sure what replacement drive to get.

My computer has a Toshiba SD-R2002 in it now, and from searching the web it looks like the Toshiba SD-R2412 is a popular replacement. Problem is, they don't seem to be available anywhere.

Can anyone recommend any other replacements? Can I just plug in the new drive and expect it to work? The new drives are much faster than my original drive - will my computer be able to take advantage of that speed increase?

Thanks!

First off, what type of iBook is it, slot-loading, or tray?

Instructions, it's not impossible but not fun either:

Places to buy, you may find it cheaper elsewhere but here's a few:

Or throw a SuperDrive in there:
