It looks like my Combo Drive in my iBook is dead, and Apple says it will be too expensive for them to fix it (the guy said "close to $1k"!). I'm thinking about replacing it myself. I'm not afraid of doing the work, but I'm not sure what replacement drive to get.

My computer has a Toshiba SD-R2002 in it now, and from searching the web it looks like the Toshiba SD-R2412 is a popular replacement. Problem is, they don't seem to be available anywhere.

Can anyone recommend any other replacements? Can I just plug in the new drive and expect it to work? The new drives are much faster than my original drive - will my computer be able to take advantage of that speed increase?

Thanks!
