How do I know what generation?

I just came from Circuit City, and bought a 20gig Ipod (YAY!), The salesperson was incredibly without knowledge. How do I know if this is a 4th generation, instead of a 3rd? Did the 3rd Gens have the click wheel?? I bought it, hoping I was right- that it is a 4th- but the box wasnt very helpful.

Look at the scroll wheel. Does it have buttons on the wheel itself? It's a 4G. Are the buttons located above the wheel? Then it's a 3G.
 
Boxes are also different - black and white for the 3G and brightly coloured for the 4G (using images from the iPod ads)
