Go 20" or 23" That is the Question

I purchased a powerbook g4 recently and now im looking for a monitor and i cant seem to decide between the 20" and 23"in cinema displays. Ill probaly going to getting a G5 down the line so that also in consideration because the monitor would be used on that. Now the price difference between the displays is $600 (with educationanal discount) is there really that big of a difference between the size of the monitors it seems to be so much for only 3 inches bigger. The monitor is used for graphic design and video editing.

Also when i do get a monitor i am intrested in looking at an arm for it and get the vesa mount. I dont really understand vesa and where can i look for the mount products.

I have the 20" - actually, the "old" 20" - and I love it. That said... if you can afford it, go for the 23". Yes, it's only 3" bigger diagonally, but it has over 30% more pixels! Big difference. I wish the 20" had better resolution - it isn't the size - which I like - it's the relatively low resolution (my work Dell laptop - almost 2 years old - has 1900x1200 resolution on a 15" screen).

Of course, you could buy the 20", save for a while, and buy a second 20" and go with the side-by-side usage that some here favor. Me, I'd prefer one larger screen.

Edit: just saw that you're using it for graphic design and video editing. For video editing, I think two monitors are better than one. For graphic design, I'd go for higher resolution on one screen. Dilemma....
 
With the powerbooks monitor as one of my screen and the new monitor as a second i will have a dual set up.

I would absolutely get the 23" if it's an option. The 3 extra diagonal inches feel like an ocean of space.

As for arms that fit a VESA mount, these guys make good products: www.marathoncomputer.com

Trust me, the 23 is a vast difference! If you have chance, why don't you pop donw to a mac store then it may help you with your decision.

My dilema is either 2 20's or one 23 🙂
 
you may have "dual monitors" but the desktop LCD's picture will be far superior to that of the pbooks.

if you have the money, go 23". like someone else said, 30% more pixels (i.e. work space) is huge!! it is much larger than the mere 3" size difference suggests, and is also HD capable, whereas the 20" isn't (thanks to apple crippling it's resolution, it's short of HD Capability by a 30 pixel width!! those bastards!).

what a waste of money. dual 30", end of debate. 😉

i'd get one 23". you can always add another monitor later (if you feel the need), but you can never upgrade the monitor.

So does anyone know how much the 20" and 23" monitors weigh without the stand? I've been looking into vesa mounts and they have weight restrictions...

In my experience... Two monitors are better than one large monitor. Three inches adds quite a few pixels. However, if you are coding, sampling music, etc two LCD's are better than one. It's handy to split up your windows between two screens. I like to put reference code on one screen and the file I'm currently working on in another! 😉
 
If you're gonna get a jumbo display, why stop at 23", go for the 30"! I have a 20" Cinema w/ a G4 Dual 1.25G right now. I'm getting a G5 Dual 2.0 soon, maybe get a 30" Cinema to go w/ it. In addition, a G5 iMac 20" will be order when it becomes availabel at the university computer store.
 
I'd say go 23". I have a 15" PB & 20" Cinema setup as dual. Everytime I see a 23" in the store I wish I had that instead. Although getting (2) 20" setup eventually would be pretty good too.
