I'm trying to connect my Mac Mini to my Vizio flat screen TV, and am having trouble with the audio output. I've connected the video through HDMI, but am trying to connect a wire and plug from the mini to the TV without success for the audio.

I first checked this online recommendation

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/08/21/ultimate-mac-mini-htpc-guide-hardware/

and followed the directions....

but I can't see the selection for "Digital Audio Output - built-in device" mentioned there and on the apple site below

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DVDPlayer/5.2/en/7023.html

any suggestions?

Is the fiber optic cable plugged in and connected to a working device? I don't think you can select audio output devices that are not connected.

Thanks Chris. That's a good point and I believe it is connected. Will try rebooting my mini once connected to the audio to be sure....

A related problem...

Hi, I'm having a related problem. I have connected a Toslink cable from the Mini to my surround sound system, but I'm getting no sound. I've also tried to connect it directly to my TV, but I don't get any sound this way either. The sound continues to play via the Mini speakers despite the Toslink cable. Any advice would be appreciated. I made the mistake of thinking this would be easy.
