Shall I restore my new 3Gs 3.1 with the back up of my old 2G 3.1.3? Or will I risk..

SO I got me a second hand 3Gs, running on 3.1.0, baseband 05.11.07, the phone has been reseted by the person who sold it to me,

but now...when I plug it to my ITunes it says "This iTunes has a previous iphone backup files" from my previous iPhone 2G that was running on the latest 3.1.3.

"would you like to restore your back up files from your old iPhone into this new iPhone?"

I'd love to use my back up since it is up to date to all my data until up to like 5 days ago. but... would I risk updating the 3Gs to the 3.1.3 firmware? or even change the baseband? or iTunes will innocently just restore all my safari bookmarks, info, notes, contacts, apps without messing around with the outdated 3Gs firmware and baseband?

I am so tempted to go ahead and use my backup, but again I don't want to risk iTunes updating my 3GS to 3.1.3 and new baseband, can someone please confirm if this procedure is safe?
 
I would recommend against it, since restoring from backup can cause all kinds of problems (including the infamous rapid power drain), and should you have to restore you would be forced to upgrade your 3GS to 3.1.3 and lose the ability to jailbreak and unlock.

U can restore the phone from the backup. You shouldn't have any problems doing so.. But if you want to be careful. Make a backup of the phone before you do it... Right click the phone in iTunes on the left. (over their ontop of the playlists).. Click create iPhone backup.. Then after that's done.. Click restore iPhone from backup and choose the iPhone 2g backup

Ok ok this is kind of good news, I never realized how important my data was from my (now written off Iphone 2g) my iPhone 2g died on me along with all the stuff in it last week,

ironically my contacts, and phone numbers I find most valuable, If I can at least get all my contacts back.

I didn't think iTunes will try to install important system files from one (older gen 2G iPhone) into a new 3Gs iphone, that is why I am pretty optimistic about this procedure...But will it try to update to the latest 3.1.3? and update the baseband: while it's dumping all my photos and contacts back into my new iPhone? that's another (very scarey) story .....

I think I will do what you said, backup my current one and go and take the plunge and restore (recover) my old one....

The stuff that is so important to you should have been synced. You then wouldn't need the backup. I highly recommend you NOT restore from the 2G backup.

What do you mean Synced? this is a new iPhone it's totally another hardware, that's what I need to know..



My iTunes is basically telling me ..:apple:"Hey B. you got yourself a shiny new (second hand) iPhone 3Gs I see, what happened to your long beloved 2G iPhone that you loved so much? ohh..wait nevermind you dropped it and messed up the digitizer and it wouldn't respond to your touch anymore you couldn't even "slide to unlock" the home screen anymore 😀..So what do you say old pal shall I sync all the old info/data from your old 2G iphone running on 3.1.3 to this new 3Gs running on 3.1?? huh huh what do you say wanna do it?.."

That was basically my iTunes talking to me and being a bit of a sneaky prick, ( yes I know I have more of an imagination than a life 🙁)

So when it asked me to sync my old 2G back up files into my new 3Gs...I just gave it an evil look, turned around and walked away...Did I do the right thing? or shall I give into it's request and say:

"Sure iTunes my old trustworthy buddy, here you go, just go ahead and sync all the data from my old (deceased) 2G, into this new one!"
 
Ok I am very happy to report SUCCESS!!🙂

it was scary to do , but I did it anyway.

iTunes successfully re-synced all my Contacts, Notes, Safari Bookmarks from my old 3.1.3 2G iPhone to my new 3Gs Running on a Custom Jailbroken 3.1.2 and 05.11.07 baseband.

the Restore-Backup took a while and the suspense was killing me, but it eventually came out fine on the other side.

Of course right after the "Restoring in Progress" was over, iTunes prompted me with the "New firmware 3.1.3 is available for your iPhone, would you like to update?"

EDIT: This is about half hour into this .. so of course I don't want to confirm anything just yet... maybe I will come back in a week and report if things are still running normally...like the battery issues mentioned below. SO yes maybe this is still premature, but I did test Wifi, works well, I had no problem syncing my bluetooth headset either, so the phone works well, Wifi and bluetooth are good to go.

As far as the Battery draining issue, it's too early to tell I will report back in 7-8 hours after a regular Saturday usage of my iphone, if things are normal or different, I will report back.

NOTE: This is about syncing back-up iPhone data (ie: Contacts, Notes, Safari Bookmarks, memory and saves for Apps and iTunes music, podcast, movie playlists etc.)

THIS IS NOT ABOUT RESTORING FIRMWARE (.ipsw files) ETC.

Thanks for your encouragement above, you kinda gave me that extra boost to do it...

I did read about some stories with things screwing up for people after restoring from old backups: But they...(the ones I read at least) date way back to firmware 3.0 iPhones ..restoring 2.2.1 jailbroken backups etc.

Anyway 8 hours has gone by without putting the phone to charge, and during those 8 hours I...

-listened to music for almost 2 hours
-Streamed Youtube videos for about 2 minutes
-Surfed on Safari for about 10 minutes
-Talked for 7 minutes
-Texted three times
-Played (heavy performing) games for about half hour

and the battery is now at...

So I guess things are A-Ok after the backup
