Jailbreak iPhone 3G with 3.1.3 and 05.12.01

Is it possible? I must be missing something, because I can't figure it out. Every site i read says it is, but I'm failing epically.

Not unlock, JUST jailbreak...

Yes, you can JB it but not unlock.
You can use Redsnow or Pwnage tool.

Guess i've just got a bum iphone, anytime i try to manually restore a firmware (even one that hasn't been jb'd) -- i get an error in itunes.

Try DFU mode.

Did that. I'm wondering if running this on a 64-bit windows might have something to do with it...

You can JB 3.1.3. and 5.12.01 if you have the old bootrom and has a SHSH stored in Saurik's server.

It's a 3G phone, SHSH is not applicable. Bootrom is not a factor.

Please read info more carefully so as not to give incorrect information.
