I'm living abroad and I'd like to buy an external DVD player so I can watch Region 2 DVDs on my North American Macbook without having to change the region of my built in DVD drive. However, I'm finding lots of external DVD burners, but few that say "Mac OS X" on the box or on the manufacturer's site.

My question is: Would any DVD burner work on a Mac, regardless what the compatability info says, if you only used it to play DVDs? In other words, does the burner have to be explicitly Mac-compatible for my computer to recognise the drive, pick up on inserted DVDs, and play them?

Please note that I have no actual interest in using it to burn DVDs, hence no desire to install any special burning software. It's sole purpose would be to play Region 2 movies.

In case it matters, here are my Macbook's specs:
MacBook 4,1 running Mac OS X 10.5.8
2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB RAM

Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Tim.
