Defrag?

How does "defragmentation" work on a Mac?
Is this what "repairs" means?

There is not much reason to "defragment" a disk on a Mac. It was usfull on PCs that used the old FAT file system before NTFS. But the concept is really now an anachronism. Mac OS X does a good job of managing the disk.

I know it is kind of disappointing if you come to the Mac from Windows. You want to do stuff like defrag, virus scans and "clean installs" but that s not much reason for any of that on UNIX based systems.

Works on the Mac drive same as on a PC drive.

You need an app like "iDefrag" to do this.

"Repairs" are entirely different. For basic disk checking and repair, use "Disk Utility".

Contrary to what some may say, you DO want to defrag a drive if you're recording audio or video to it.

mac os x has automatic defragmentation that works in the background, the end user need not bother with it

repair permissions as to do with the read/write/execute permissions that are set as part of every file in a unix filesystem... repairing permissions every once in a while is a good idea... once or twice a year usually does it
