I am new to the Mac OS X environment and I was simply wondering whether or not you were able to record your voice onto the music that you mix using GarageBand. If you are able to do this could someone please tell me what devices are needed to do so? Thanks!

For awhile, Apple shipped machines without a built-in mic or a microphone in port.

If you have one of those machines (CIRCA 2001 or so) you'll need a USB audio adaptor like the iMic

Macs have a built-in microphone? Or did I read that wrong 😕

Spock Says...Yes the iMac eMac iBook and Powerbook have built-in mics and the G5 only has input I think.

Interesting. Well I have a G5 so no go there 🙁 but my dad has an iBook; where is the microphone on the iBook? I assume around the keyboard?

assuming its the same ibook as i have, its up in the upper right hand corner of the screen bezel. its a little hole.

Easy way to find the mic placement:

1. Open System Preferences.
2. Go to the Sound pane.
3. Click the input tab.
4. Slide up the Input Volume
5. Snap fingers, and notice sound registers.
6. Move fingers, and repeat step five until you find the loudest point.

I think on the 15 inch PowerBooks, it's down inside the speaker grill.
