Thumb Injury From Orange Fruit

I rarely eat oranges however I found myself faced with a huge orange the other day.

I went to peel this orange and ever since my thumb (mainly the nail tip) has been killing me. I cant apply pressure to the tip of it. and the top of the thumb looks very raw.

anyone have this happen to them? Something having to do with the acid in the orange getting under my thumbnail?

Amputation seems fitting.

You bruised your nail, and probably pulled it away from the flesh a bit too. Poor thing. Where's your mother?

You probably pulled your nail back underneath, leaving a tiny wound and the acidity irritated it. Put some tea tree oil or something antibacterial on it and don't fiddle with it too much.

Or of course you can consult your doctor if you're really worried.

out of these three suggestions, I decided to go with the last one and dip my thumb in a cup of Purell antibacterial.

on another note, is there any other method of eating an orange that doesnt involve peeling with thumbs? Possibly cutting vertical strips or something?

You could buy a $10 orange peeler.

Cut it into slices and don't bother peeling it at all.

i am not a monkey expert but i think they rely on their mouth and teeth to eat most of the orange.
the skin of the orange is very acidic though so I cant see myself doing that to get to the insides.

i might just stick with orange juice.

Bite into it a bit just enough to break the skin then you can stick your finger under there and peel it away without putting any pressure on your fingers. That's what I do.

I've heard you can get a staph infection from getting an under-the-nail orange-peeling "injury."

not quite sure what irritable bowel syndrome is but it sounds like diaraheera and I have been suffering from that lately after the orange problem.

but in all honestly, this is indeed a pretty big problem here. oranges are beginning to really get on me with these thumb problems. I dont mind eating them plain, but i now require someone else to peel them up for me. i didnt want to resort to that but it has.
