What model computer?

Can you still see the image on the pixels, ie the LCD works, but there is no backlight?

If it's the result of a drop it's almost certain you have a hardware problem which will need specialist repair.

You could try resetting the SMC (Apple site will say how), it might help.

likely the power supply to the backlight has been severed/damaged

if you're willing to take a chance you can open up your macbook according to http://www.ifixit.com and look for the connection and possibly fix it

If it's an older Mac, it will have a CCFL backlight. Then the problem could be the inverter, the cable or the backlight. The inverter generates high voltage electricity for the backlight. I think the inverter sits near the hinge, it's a bear to get at.

If it's a newer Mac with LED backlighting there is no inverter. Just the cable and the display. The display should be very robust though - I can't imagine the LEDs would break without the actual glass panel breaking. Maybe the cable has been damaged.
