I set my Gmail to fetch every hour and although sometimes it would do it, most of the time it won't fetch at all until I wake it. So if I last used my iPod at 11 PM and then went to bed and got an e-mail at, say 11:15 PM, the iPod won't fetch the e-mail until I wake up at 7 AM when I actualy wake the iPod up.
