I am using one of those with both my G3/400 and my dual 800 and it's working quite well in both Mac OS 9.x and 10.x.
You should probably start by plugging it directly into the USB port rather than going through a hub, if you haven't done that already. I have also noticed at times that, if you don't have a disk in the drive, it won't recognize it.
