Connecting a MacBook Pro to an external display via DVI

I'm trying to connect my MBP to an external AOC M19W531 display using the mini displayport to DVI adapter.

When I connect the monitor to the MBP nothing happens, and when I switch the monitor on or off the MBP displays a blue screen for a few seconds and then back to normal, but the external monitor remains blank.

I checked the cable with another laptop-monitor and it works.

Any ideas?
