Setting up my internet, cant find the IP address
i just found an old mac in my room, i think it is a power mac g4, it is running OS X 10.3
i am trying to get it connected to the internet using a cable straight from it to my router (netcomm), the same way i do with my other mac. however, no matter how many different variations i use of my various settings, it wont connect. i have come down to needing a subnet mask, ip address, and router address. im almost certain i have the subnet mask and router addie correct, but there seems to be no way for me to find the g4's IP. i have been in system preferences, but all the 'IP' bits are just blank and unclickable. i dont know if it makes a difference, but the G4 was connected to the internet in the past before we upgraded, so it should have an IP somewhere, right?

You can choose the IP yourself.
If the router has the IP 192.168.0.1 and a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, then you can give any IP from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.255 to the G4, except the one that are used by other computers in your network. Look at the router IP and the IP of your other computers to decide which IP the G4 might get. A subnet mask of 255.255.255.0 leaves you with zero variations on the first, second and third three-number block (192, 168, 0), but you can choose 256 numbers from 0 to 255 for the last block (1 is the number for your router). Sometimes there are also IPs like 10.0.1.1 given for the router. |

Did you use DSL before? You may still have PPPoE enabled. Disabling it should revert back to using DHCP which means you shouldn't need to manually feed the computer IP/subnet/router addresses.
