iPad car mount
I bought a 2006 Chrysler last week and built a mount for the iPad this weekend. The idea was that it had to be inexpensive; no bolting (all velcro), no blocking of vents or center console items; adjustable, works with the apple case without being removed or using fasteners or suction cups.
I used a modified telescoping, collapsable music stand ($14) I bought it locally, purchased a modified document presentation holder ($5.99) and velcro from office max. The whole thing works great.
First, the music stand is light, strong and small. The legs are on a 120 degree angle from each other so I cut and bent two of them to 180 degrees leaving the third leg to set on the floor in front of the passenger side seat. The base sits right on the floor and is velcroed to the plastic on the slider rail. The bottom of the stand has velcro wrapped around the base and then to pieces over the lower half attached to the side of the console. This allows it to be removed quickly and holds it in place great.
The portion that would normally hold sheet music is cut and re-pop rivited to fit the 8" wide document holder. The key is to retaing the slide in metal slot so it will slip on the stand rod. The document holder is cut at the top to fit a landscape fit for the iPad, allowing the case to flip over. I haven't "capped" it yet, so it isn't smooth, but works great.
The holder works great without fasteners becuase the case rubber surface grabs the document holder and it pivits easily to the passenger and doesn't interfer.
All in all it took me 45 minutes, total cost $25.
I currently have a retractable audio cable going into my aux jack, but will be adding a parrot blue tooth stereo setup. I am using verizon myfi for data.
