I just got a new iMac a few days ago and I am new to Macs in general. I am trying to edit a .mpeg file (from my old PC) in IMovie in order to eventually put it on a DVD. Quicktime will open the file (I dont have QT Pro), but IMovie will not allow me to open it. Is there any way to edit a .mpeg file in IMovie, or is there some software that someone might recommend downloading or purchasing. I have read a few posts about Toast Titanium- will this do the trick? Sorry for all of the questions, I am still very new to Macs. Any help will be GREATLY appreciated!

iMovie can't edit mpeg files directly - you must convert it to DV (in process losing quality) and then compress it again to mpeg (losing more).
You can use DVDxDV for this: http://www.dvdxdv.com/
But only use this method if you need to add transitions and effects since it degrades the video.
To edit mpeg directly use mpeg stream clip: http://www.alfanet.it/squared5/mpegstreamclip.html
But it only allows you to cut out or insert parts into your mpeg file however it keeps the original quality of the input video.

You might want to consider purchasing QuickTime Pro, which would allow you to save the files as DV clips, although you need lots of disk space for this. It seems like a pain, sure, but, with digital cams and FireWire, DV input into iMovie is leagues ahead of MPEG and WMV.
