I was looking at some word docs

Using the built in Preview as well as goodreader.

The recognition is buggy (lines wrap and right margin gets truncated).

Is Pages any better?

Different but not better. Depends on the complexity and features used in the word document. Only foolproof way is print to PDF then view the PDF on the iPad. Even then depends on the reader used. Had the best luck with iannotate.
