itunes corrupt, wont open, wont reinstall

Naturally I don't want to loose all the songs and videos accumulated in itunes..

I've also looked to clear caches in Library/caches etc but nothing I've tried seems to fix.

Try to repair disk permissions with disk utility

Did you try starting in safe mode?
Hold shift key while restarting

Did you try to open up a new user?
The ditch old user profile

Throw out itunes.plist Preferences file

Download Pacifist and re-install itunes via the package

Plenty of choices.

Removing iTunes for Mac OS X

By the way, you do know that your iTunes library, where all your movies and music are held, is external to the actual iTunes application right? Removing iTunes from the computer is not going to delete your media content.

All recent versions of iTunes backup your library by itself when updating.

Library backup is located at:
useraccount/music/itunes/Previous iTunes Libraries

1. Go to useraccount/music/itunes
compress "iTunes Library" (to backup) and put "iTunes Library" in the trash.

2. Go to useraccount/music/itunes/Previous iTunes Libraries
and COPY (not move) the most recent "iTunes Library 2010-xx-yy" file into
useraccount/music/itunes

3. Changed copied "iTunes Library 2010-xx-yy" file into "iTunes Library"

That should be it.

If that doesn't work, use AppCleaner to uninstall iTunes.
Then download / reinstall latest version.

If it doesn't work you might have to
iTunes Music Library.xml
