make my mac and pc talk....

what is the best way to access my mac from my windows xp computer over a router home network....

i have been using smb to connect to my pc from the mac (but now i cant get it work anymore)... so can i do it from the other end...
 
I just hook both machines into the network, open up My Network Places on the Windows XP machine, and voila, the Mac appears. I didn't have to configure a thing. Strangely, I can't get it going quite so simply from the mac end.
